A Quiet Passion, 6 September, 2017 8pm

UK, 2016, Dir: Terence Davies, Biographical film, 126 mins (U).

A Quiet Passion is a 2016 biographical film directed and written by Terence Davies about the life of American poet Emily Dickinson. The film stars Cynthia Nixon as the reclusive poet. It co-stars Emma Bell as young Dickinson, Jennifer Ehle, Duncan Duff and Keith Carradine.

Terence Davies read six biographies of Emily Dickinson prior to making the film and he believes that she is a genius. Cynthia Nixon also read a lot of biographies of Emily Dickinson in order to get into the role and she detected contradictions, but she found it interesting because she had the chance to choose her favorite versions.

In May 2015, after a long time in development hell, A Quiet Passion finally began production in Belgium. The film was shot at AED Studios on a replica of Dickinson's house. Additional scenes were also filmed in Amherst and Pelham, Massachusetts.

Reviews:
"It is Davies’ ability to invest even the most apparently-humdrum moments with some form of intense radiance that sustains his film."
Andrew Pulver, The Guardian (****)

"it is grounded, and made most exemplary, by Cynthia Nixon’s performance. Every actor in this movie is wonderful. But Nixon’s precision in portraying every particular mood of Emily—for each individual scene calls for absolute specificity—is simply spectacular."
Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com (****)
