Set during the 1970’s Chinese Cultural Revolution, the film tells the tale of two bourgeois men banished to a mountain village for re-education with hard labour. However, they seize the opportunity to introduce a local girl to classic literature. Sijie Dai’s skill as a writer casts a spell over the story, which is his own story.
